The Popularity Of Humor’s Usage In Comedy Movies

In recent years, comedies have been springing up and flourishing in the film and TV market both in China and America. Friends, Bruce Almighty, Big Momma’s House and Rush Hour are popular in America all the time. In China, My Own Swordsman, the Second Best and Big Movie have been booming in China.

The remarkable characteristics of comedy are using exaggeration, ingenious structures and humorous lines to make the audience laugh at the ugliness and funniness and have positive attitude toward life.

This paper will focus on analyzing the expression techniques used in the comedies in China and America. Humor refers to a concept of psychology, which refers to psychological and behavioral characteristics of human body on the basis of physiology, which is a kind of temperament and personality.

And, humor is an art and aesthetic concept on the behavioral characteristics of human beings that can bring people joy and happiness. Different cultures between China and America decide comparability of expression techniques of comedic humor in Chinese and American comedies. For one thing, the similarities of humor language usage in comedies over China and America are that both Chinese and American comedies use homonymy, hyperbole and displacement to achieve humor. Due to respective characteristics of Chinese and English, comedies in China and America use some different expression techniques, such as dialects and crosstalk used in Chinese comedies, slangs used in American comedies.

For another thing, the similarities of designing of comedic models are that both Chinese and American comedies use satirical imitation, contrast and crossacting to achieve humor. But, due to different concepts on social class, gender and tastes, differences in designing of comedic models in comedies between China and America are that women are dressed as men in Chinese comedies and African American humor are used in American comedies. According to the above comparison, Chinese and American comedies should learn from each other and present more splendid works to the audience.
